Maria’s work is inspired by her environment. Born and practicing in Cyprus, it is almost inevitable that the rich human history and landscape of this central mediterranean island influences her jewelry. Daughter of Cypriot artist George Kotsonis and the musician Kleopatra Kotsoni, Maria developed an early interest in the arts.
She completed her B.A. in 1991 at London’s St. Martins College of Art & Design. That same year she was commissioned by the Bishop of Paphos (Cyprus) to design and produce a bishop’s mitre in silver and semi-precious stones. In 2004, she established the Maria Kotsoni Designer Jeweller workshop/showroom in Nicosia, where she continues to design and make jewellery.
Maria primarily works with precious metals and gemstones, specializing in wax carving. However, while she mostly uses traditional techniques, Maria also employs 3D printing.
