Pantone Colour of the Year
PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR 2018 – Ultra Violet
In the words of Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today”. That is indeed a bold statement, however, colour does play an important role in our lives, often being the catalyst for the decisions and choices we make.
Ultra Violet is a part of the broad group of colours that are housed under the generic ‘purple’ family. The colour Ultra Violet being a blue-based purple it tends to be associated with calm and stability, as opposed to red-based purples which are fierce energy.
Purple has long been associated with a diverse range of subjects, from royalty, power, religion and wealth, through to creativity, wisdom, devotion and peace.

In Japan, it signifies wealth and position
In Roman times, it was the royal colour of the Caesars.
In Thailand, it is often worn by a widow following her husband’s death.
In Tibet, amethyst is considered to be sacred due to it association with Buddha.
In Egypt, it denotes virtue and faith.
In the UK, purple was one of the three colours, the others being white and green, chosen to represent the Suffragette movement. Purple being chosen to represent loyalty and dignity.
In the world of jewellery we often associate this colour with the gemstone Amethyst, the Birthstone of the Month for February.
Other ‘purple’ gemstones include; Ametrine and Sugilite whilst Jade, Quartz, Jasper, Topaz, Tourmaline, Agate, Chalcedony and Fluorite all have varying grades of purple. There is even a purple diamond which is amongst the most expensive of the purple gemstones. Pricing can be up to $1.5M a carat!
