Claire Skelton

United Kingdom

Claire trained in silversmithing and jewellery in Northern Ireland and Finland. She now makes jewellery from her hometown outside Belfast. Her designs are drawn from her artwork that explores the value of the sentimental jewellery of the past, transforming it into contemporary pieces for the future. Her pieces are hand-made with a focus on sustainability. “I create bespoke jewellery, giving sentimental, heirloom gold new life by reworking the metal and forging a new, contemporary piece to be worn and enjoyed once again. I am inspired by the beautiful and absorbing process of melting gold. I find alchemy in the ability of metal to be infinitely recreated and reimagined. I utilise this characteristic of precious metal in my collections, to make my work sustainable. I pay particular attention to the traditional technique of granulation as it allows me to melt down fragments, even as small as gold dust, into tiny spheres, placing them as the gem at the focal point of the jewellery. It’s my way of respecting the material and the piece’s history, saving every last speck of dust from being wasted, instead reincorporating it back into the piece.”
