Laurel Nathanson

Pattern and color permeate the work of Oakland, California based artist and jeweler, Laurel Nathanson.  Her current body of jewelry is an exciting combination of textured silver, plexiglass, glass beads and semi-precious stone beads. It is the combination of the precious, natural materials, with non-valuable man-made materials that Laurel is excited by, and that gives the work an unexpected quality. All of her textures are hand stamped, giving slight variations to each piece, emphasizing a sense of the handmade. She designs many of her own stamps and continues to evolve her texture patterns.

In addition to her hand-crafted work, Laurel also creates digital art works from her handmade pieces. Her jewelry art prints are layered, fantastical, and at times other worldly abstractions. She begins by photographing her jewelry as well as current and vintage jewelry related ephemera. She brings all these parts together in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to create these heavily layered digital collages. The collages are a homage to the craft Laurel has loved for over 30 years.

Laurel lives in a purple dollhouse with her two pups, Bonnie and Bailey. When not creating, teaching or walking her pups, Laurel can be found where ever there is an 80’s night dance party.
