Handcrafted 3D Printed Jewellery
VARILY - 3D Printed Jewellery
that is Handcrafted
From 3D printing to ancient techniques, unique jewellery that
combines old and new.
Contemporary designer jewellery label, VARILY, creates exclusive
accessories by combining innovative 3D printing technology with ancient
techniques. In her studio in Holland, designer Valeria D’Annibale, mixes
materials and pigments to create extraordinary ornaments that break the rules
with her ‘Clash’ philosophy. Starting from the production process....who said
that 3D printing can't be handmade?
The Process
Every piece of Varily’s collection is inspired by a specific
concept, from mathematical rules (e.g., golden ratio), architecture and nature.
The initial step is a hand drawn sketch that is then transferred to 3D
modelling software and prepared for the printer. The file is sent to an SLS
printer that uses laser technology on powdered material to create a detailed 3
dimensional object. Once the item is printed it is then hand-finished, the
surface is smoothed by hand and the parts are prepared for fitting.
At this point the object is dip dyed by hand in boiling hot
pigments, which have been individually mixed to achieve a specific hue and
shade (taking inspiration from Pantone swatches and fashion colour trends of the
current year). Some pieces require 3 to 4 baths to achieve their gradients and
bright colours. The items are then water and UV proofed, fitted with inhouse
handmade silver findings and are ready to be worn. This process allows the use
of lightweight nylon material that reacts well to pigments baths. The dyeing
process is similar to ancient techniques such as batik and shibori. The end result
is a unique 3D printed handcrafted adornment.
The Clash Philosophy
The concept of Clash: a state of conflict
between colours*. In everyday life we are bombarded by an array of rules to follow:
in society, in fashion, and at home. Those things they say don’t go together...
black and blue, red and purple, pretty and smart, family and career...Varily’s
mission is to break these rules with a clash of colours, shapes and forms
to help the wearer express and showcase exactly who they are and feel confident
in their own skin. With artful pieces, Varily provides everyone with the
ability to express their unique selves by wearing especially crafted, socially
conscious, high quality accessories, designed and made with Conscience and
Love.
